Third GradeTeacher: Mrs. Franczek for Mrs. Hemmer
Happy 2010!It seems like only yesterday that the new school year began, but as we welcome in the new year, we are also approaching the end of the 2nd quarter. The 3rd graders have been busy acquiring new skills and growing in both their academic knowledge and love of God. As we look ahead, we have many wonderful new things to learn. In Social Studies and Reading, we will be focusing on how our traditions and the traditions of others enrich our lives. Religion class will help us to understand the Catholic identity of the church and how Catholics are open to all. We will look at the importance of the Mass and how we are called to pray for people as well as serve them. English class will find us working on verbs and subject-verb agreement as well as our creative writing skills. We will be covering Lessons 16 through 19 in our spelling book. Our emphasis in handwriting will be on overcurve letters and improving our Midline Guidelines.A new year brings many challenges and rewards. The 3rd graders are ready to work hard and accomplish their goals! Daily Oral LanguageYou may have spied some interesting looking papers coming home over the past several weeks. They have many spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization errors that are dutifully corrected in red ink. The 3rd graders are learning how to edit simple sentences for common writing mistakes. They are using the editing marks found in their English textbook. The outcome is greater accuracy in their own creative writing pieces. Auction Basket News The 3rd grade auction basket is underway! The theme for our basket is "Kiss the Cook." We are looking to fill our basket with items such as cookware, bakeware, kitchen gadgets and utensils, small countertop appliances, serving dishes and platters, placemats with matching napkins and napkin rings, potholders and oven mitts, dishtowels, cookbooks, a chef's hat, aprons, gift certificates to grocery and specialty food stores, and gift certificates to restaurants so the cook can have a night off. Let's make this a basket to delight the hearts of our most treasured cooks! Math Is A Blast! Our class is busy learning the basic multiplication facts through 10. When flashcards become too routine, add some variety with a great card game called Math War! You can play using regular decks of cards that are probably already in your home. Each player needs his/her own deck of cards. Shuffle and divide your own deck in half, and place it in front of you. Everyone turns their own two top cards over at the same time. Cards are then multiplied. The highest product takes all the cards played. Tied? Turn over your next two cards. To win, end up with the most cards. Hint: This game is also a great way to review addition and subtraction facts! Teacher Tips Does your child study effectively for tests? Do long hours of practice pay off in good grades? If your answer is no, then it may be that your child's study method needs to be refined. Try a simple method called SQ3R. Have your child survey the chapter material first. Look at pictures and subheadings to get an idea of what the chapter is about. Next, turn each subheading into a question. This gives you a purpose for reading. Read the subsection, and recite the answer to your question. Review your information by going back over all subheading questions when you are finished with the chapter. Reminders to Students:
