Dear Parents,
Welcome to St. Maria Goretti’s Science Fair 2011-2012. Our fair is scheduled for Saturday,January 28th, 2012 at 9 am. Please mark the date on your calendar, there is no make up date for the science fair. All students in grades 5 through 8 are expected to participate. I have enclosed a brief set of guidelines for the projects and the important due dates.
1. All projects must answer a question and be testable. Demonstrations are not acceptable, ie. volcanoes.
2. The projects must be safe for the students to do.
3. Encourage your child to select a project that interests them and is age appropriate.
4. Visit the library for books on science projects.
Due Dates:
1. A written proposal containing the students’ topic, hypothesis, and a simplified description of how they plan to execute their project will be due on September 26th and 27th. The IJAS has a wonderful website with a link to science fair ideas, www.ijas.org.
2. Due dates will be handed out in science class for each phase of the paper packet.
3. The completed presentation boards and paper packets are due in my homeroom on Friday December 16th, 2011. When we return from the winter break, the students will get to practice presenting their projects, to their peers.
Extensions
Extensions may be granted on an individual basis and may have points deducted from the overall grade. There should be no reason that the students cannot finish their projects on time.
As soon as the students have approved topics, Ms. Drougas will begin to work with them on the research paper portion. Ms. Drougas will only do the Review of Literature and works cited pages in the paper packet. The rest will be done in science. Please encourage your children to submit their topics early as I expect to have approximately 90-100 projects to oversee. Although I strongly suggest students do not use partners, those who wish to have a partner for their project must have a signed permission slip on file. I am including in this informational packet a list of the different areas of concentration, an example of the written proposal for your children to follow, and how the paper packet is laid out with a brief description of what each page should have. If anyone is interested in participating as a judge, or has any questions please pkrielaart@smgcougars.com.
