 December / January Monthly Highlights

Advent, feast days and special Christmas themes fill our program of study in Religion during December.

In addition to celebrating our Family Mass on Sunday, January 6th, the students are finishing a Vocations unit and will turn their attention to Family Life with themes of justice and prejudice as our focus.

We completed our Christmas reading unit which focused on a variety of thematic literature and are well into an integrated unit of study on the Westward Movement featuring the novel Sara Plain and Tall.

In English the students completed the Review of Literature and Reference List sections of the Science Fair research book during December and will discover the importance and influence of American History on writing and composition as it encompasses our many acquired skills through hands-on experiences during our January Journey.

In Math, we will be working on our Catholic School’s Week Unit where we will do application based mathematics dealing with the Westward movement.  Everyone get on the wagon!

In Science this month, the students are learning about animal adaptations. The students will experience the westward movement in science class. The students will study botany, keep nature journals, learn about animal adaptations, and discover how to pan for gold.  The students will also prepare for the science fair this month.

In Social Studies, the sixth graders will be traveling to America to take “A Walk Through American History” for Catholic Schools Week.  They will be learning more about the Western Movement and the Gold Rush.  They will practice their mapping skills and look at important people and places of that time period.
