January Pre-Kindergarten Highlights

The New Year has many exciting things in store for the Pre-K students. Stories of snow and winter activities are starting points for some interesting projects.  Perhaps even a little indoor ice skating will be on tap.

In Religion, God continues to show the children His goodness through topics, such as light, air, color, and weather.  The Christmas story enfolds further with the visit of the Three Wise Men and the early years of Jesus in Nazareth.

Everyone Has Needs is the unit that brings the next Letter People to our classroom.  Shy Mr. C hides under his colossal cap but tries to show that everyone needs food.  Lots of energy is what Miss E has as she demonstrates the need for exercise.  Everyone       needs rest is what Miss Y tells us.  She yodels when she yawns.  The children continue to practice the letters and explore their sounds in every day activities.

In Math, the children are working with numbers seven and eight.  Counting, sorting, and making patterns with winter themes is quite exciting.  Various activities with shapes make them more real.  Following and extending patterns has proven to be quite challenging.

January brings Catholic Schools Week.  Throughout the month, we are exploring the ocean using a multitude of stories and projects. The Rainbow Fish, Fish is Fish, Swimmy, Over in the Ocean, and Ten Little Fish are just some of the interesting pieces of literature that will be shared and followed with hands-on activities.  Making seahorses, crabs, lobsters, octopi, jellyfish, and several different kinds of fish keep the students very busy. Some at home projects further add interest and cooperative learning. The children are so looking forward to the Sunday Mass and Open House when they can share all that they have learned.

As an outreach project, we are starting our “Pennies for Peace” campaign.  Filling our fish bowl with pennies will help the less fortunate.
